how can I have report on totals of count in groupings in the report and filters

how can I have report on totals of count in groupings in the report and filters

Currently, when I run a report and group by a column value (such as status) I can't get a sub-total count of the number of records for each sub-grouping.  The only totals it allows are for actual "values" such as "revenue" or "employee count" -- but I really need to show the number values.

Also, for that same report, I need to filter out by lead-source...right now, I can only see it for the entire lead-universe.  how can I filter by lead-source?
