How can I use CRM to initiate a webservice call

How can I use CRM to initiate a webservice call

I would like to initiate a web service call from inside CRM, passing CRM data as arguments in the call and populating a field in CRM with the returned service call result.

Is this possible, even if not exactly as laid out?
