How do you control paragraph formatting?

How do you control paragraph formatting?

Every time I paste text into an e-mail I'm composing, the program automatically changes the paragraph format from 1 space to 2 spaces between paragraphs, and there seems to be no way to change it back.  How do I reset the paragraph format after pasting text into an e-mail?
