How to create a formula field across modules

Is it possible in ZOHO to create a formula field that gets calculated with information from other modules?

For instance, I have two modules, Invoices and Payments

In Invoices I create a formula field called Balance, so that every time that there is a payment record created my balance is updated.

Can this be done? It seems to me that restricting the formula fields to their own module have very limited applicability. To be useful we need to cross reference different modules.
