How to log in without using google?

I use gmail, and when I try log in using my user name / gmail address with the correct password, the attempt seems to always fail. It succeeds when I click on "login using Google".

Is there a way to log in by user name and password without using the Google login facility? or do I have to create a new account altogether, and lose all data in the old account?
