Initial Document Version

Is there any way to specify the initial version of a document when uploading?
It seems the initial version is always set to 1.1 and increments to 1.2, 1.3 etc on subsequent uploads.
It would be very useful if the version could be specified, or even better if it was extracted from the document metadata (if available). It would also be useful if the default version increment could be specified, e.g. going from version 1 to version 2 instead of 1.1 to 1.2
