Invoice numbers need to be shorter

Invoice numbers need to be shorter

Is there any way to get the automatically generated invoice numbers to start back at a more manageable number and not a 17 number beast? I know I can create a new field with the autonumber datatype starting at whatever i want, but i want to know if it is possible what is available by default.
