Is it possible to display the inbox email list and the preview panel side by side?

I quite often sort through a lot of recent emails and the preview panel is a must but it would be nice to be able to see a longer list of emails than the current configuration (email list top, preview pane bottom) allows.

I have looked through the settings and templates and have found nothing. If there is a way to do this it would be fantastic!
