Workflows STOP working because of Layout Rules

Let me start by saying that I have already reported this issue to customer service, and I did get the following email reply from Zoho Support Team: 

"Greetings from Zoho CRM Support.  Thank you for your patience. We have checked your requirement from our end and I am sorry to inform that the same field cannot be associated with the Conditional Field and with the Workflow at the same time as this would require two different set of Automations which can conflict.  Feel free to reach us for further assistance."

Now, the problem I'm having is:

In a custom module, we have one field which is a picklist field for us called "Stage", which is automatically updated every time other fields are edited. In this case, all other fields are dates.

The workflows in this module work perfectly and they not only update the "Stage" field, they trigger all kind of notification, tasks and field updates (updates in the same and across modules).

The problem starts when we added layout rules to this module. We needed to prevent users from updating the "Stage" manually, so we set up a layout rule which allowed us to set date fields mandatory every time someone wanted to change stages.

The layout rule worked perfectly, locking the Stage field based on the options in it and the emptiness of certain date fields. Unfortunately, all automation workflows related to the Stage field STOPPED.

What concerns me about Zoho Support:

  • It is not a requirement on my end. It is a bug that prevents from working 2 features of the CRM system, Workflow and Layout Rules.
  • How can Zoho does not try to fix this? We all have automations involving several fields, what is the purpose of introducing a new feature if you can't use it with the most important one in the CRM platform.
