Lead Reports

I need to be able to run a report where I can see how many leads I received each month over the entire year or a given month. Also, I'd like to be able to sort by Lead Source. So far it seems that when ever I convert a lead to a Contact. That lead is no longer accessible in the lead reports. Please let me know if there is a way to accomplish what I'm trying to do?
