Leads not importing

I am unable to import leads from Excel. I have tried with a Lead ID column and without. I have added my own Lead ID # to the spreadsheet and still no luck. Sometimes the Lead Id field doesn't even appear in the mapping step and other times it does. Anyone else experienced this?
