Line breaks in Advanced Display layouts

When creating a Lookup field with a Multiple Selected List display type, is there a way to set the advanced display options to have each new selection begin on a new line (i.e., line break?) The form seems to take a standard html <BR>, but generates an error message ("the value of attribute 'separator' associated with an element type 'field' must not contain the '<' character" when I try to close it.
