I have found a workaround (sort of) to be able to open files stored on a local drive from within Zoho CRM.  For my use, I want to be able to access my recorded calls from within a contact record.  By creating a field called "Document Path" as a text area, I store the path to the folder with my documents in it "C:\users\myname\my documents".  I use a free app called "ClickTo", basically an app launcher, which can be configured to launch Windows Explorer.  By selecting the text in the Document Path field, right click on the highlighted text and the ClickTo app pops up with an icon for Windows Explorer.  Click the Explorer icon and it launches Explorer with your Document Path, just select the file you want and it will start the associated program, Word, Media Player etc with your document in it.  It is not perfect, but it is quicker than downloading attached documents and you don't have to worry about how big your documents are.
