mail merge

I have a stupid question.

Whats the difference between using Mail Merge to create a group email and merge fields from contacts and using an email templete. It seems to me that they do the same thing, except that using an email templete you can keep track of the email sent to the individual persons.

what am I missing?

when would you use the mail merge?
