mail not coming in unless i restart apple mail

For some reason, email has not been coming into my Apple Mail program unless I quit Mail and then reopen.  It continues to come in fine on my iPhone.  I have rebuilt the email inbox and even deleted the account and recreated it.  it comes in fine but any new emails thereafter are not coming through.  they still come in fine on my iPhone and iPad however.
