Mail status filter and email permissions

I have a question about the way the email status filter works in a contacts or leads view.

This filter allows me to see contacts to whom we have sent an email within the latest 10 days, for example. My question is: what if another user sent an email to a contact, and I don't have permission to see that user's emails (they are set to private)?

Will the filter take into account emails that I can't see, and show the contact in the filtered list? But I won't see that particular email if I enter the contact's record.

OR, the filter won't take into account emails that I can't see, and this contact won't appear in the filtered list.

This is important because I don't want to write to contacts too often, but if the filter takes into account only the emails I can see, then I can't really know if someone else has recently written to the contact.
