Make email template subject line accept more characters?

Make email template subject line accept more characters?

Currently, I seem to have a limitation of 32 characters or thereabouts on the subject line of my email templates. However, this is to short because I'm using merge fields whose code takes up way more characters than the actual text that will be inserted. Can you lengthen that field to accommodate using merge fields?

Or is there a way to customize that already?
