More mail issues

After the imap issues yesterday my iMac is still having problems.  It is continuously trying to download thousands of emails, and then it hangs the mail program.  At one point yesterday it said it was downloading 80,000 emails!  The number seems to change, it's trying to download a few hundred at one point, then several thousand.  It never completes anything before freeezing the mail app.

Today I've had out of memory error messages twice.  I have 32 gb of memory on board (functioning - i checked) and I'm not running any intensive apps today.   mail, chrome, finder, scansnap - nothing else.   That should all run fine on 4 gb.

OS/X el Capitan  10.11.1
32 gb RAM
500 GB Flash
RiMac 27"

Watching system resources now, mail is using over 30 GB of memory.  I have to force quit the mail app to stop it.

This has completely crashed mail.  It used up to 60 GB of system mem with all system memory and swap memory.  Now I have to reboot the computer to run mail.  But it will only crash again in a few minutes since it trys to download everything when mail is opened.
