Negative Number Appearance

Can someone tell me why negative numbers for discounts show up with a minus sign but negative numbers for adjustments show up in parenthesis?

I'd like to change the adjustment so that the negative number shows up with a minus sign OR the discount to show in parenthesis. Is it possible to do this?
