Net New Deals vs. Renewals

Is there a way to differentiate a net new deal record vs. a renewal deal record? 

I would like to have two separate record types as they have different sales cycle stages and don't want to add them in the same timeline. I would also like to see 2 separate reports on net new deals vs. renewals. 

Stages
Net New - (Propect, Lead, Qualify, Quote, Negotiation, Close Won/Lost)
Renewal - (Requirements, Quote, Close Won/Lost)
