I filter some of my messages directly to sub folders. The problem is that if there are new messages filtered to these sub folders, I won't know there are new messages because the root folder doesn't add the new messages contained in the sub folders. Also, I can't set the default view to expand all folders.

For instance, in the screenshot below, there are 6 new messages in my Inbox, but it doesn't account for the 2 new messages in my Memberships folder. Instead, Inbox should say I have 8 new messages.
