Notification Overload!! Can we turn off notifications when custom functions run?

I run custom functions when users create a lead / contact to check for missing data / errors and update automatically.

For example:

- Leads: if they enter just a zip code I automatically insert the City and State

- Contacts: If "phone" is empty I pull it in from the parent account

Notification Problem:

Everytime a custom function is run the user is getting notifications that their record has been updated. This is extremely annoying when they are adding new contacts / accounts.

Related Feeds Problem:

Obviously this has a negative affect on the feeds area because it's overrun by notifications of automatic updates triggered by Custom Functions.

Is there a way to stop notifications when a record is updated by a RULE / CUSTOM FUNCTION?
