Outgoing CRM Sales Order emails taking 15-60 minutes

Currently when we use the "Send Mail" button on the Sales Order it is taking at least 15 minutes and up to a hour for the client to receive it.

The CRM is sending all workflow emails instantly and that's working fine. (which is weird as I'm having the workflows send e-mails to external email addresses, not the users.)

Just wondering if anyone knew the reasoning behind this, and a possible solution?
