Parent folder of unread messages is marked as read

Hi,

I have this problem: I have created several filters so that mails end up in the correct mail folder.

However, when I have new mails and they are marked as unread, I cannot see them, because the folder is marked READ. 
I cannot open 10+ folders just to check if there are new messages, that would make filters useless!

Any idea what I can do?
