POP3 and Exchange - emails appearing as READ in outlook

POP3 and Exchange - emails appearing as READ in outlook

I have recently set up my POP3 account with ZOHO mail.  It is using my exchange email account which I use outlook. 
 
Since I have set up the POP3 on zoho all of my emails are appearing as READ in exchange outlook and my mobile device (connected via active sync exchange on Andriod S4).  I haven't opened them in either zoho, outlook or my mobile.
 
anyone know why this is happening.  I am losing track of my emails because it is listing them all as read when I haven't opened them....
