problem creating signature

In attempting to create a signature, I used an html editor and included a horizontal rule above and below text. I cut and pasted this into the signature settings window, but I could not save the signature that way. I get a "serious error" message.

I did finally manage to save the sig without the horizontal rules above and below, but I'd rather have them if there's a way.
