Product Variations on SO, Inv etc

I know the inventory module that appears on sales orders, invoices, products is not yet customizable but I have another issue. I'm dealing with clothing and for each shirt ,for instance, comes in different colors and sizes. When someone orders we usually only have one product code for that style of shirt and associate color/size/qty to it. Your system only has one Qty field per item. Creating all the different variations of this one style of shirt would be fairly redundant and create extremely long invoices.

Is there anything in the future that will deal with product variations? I'd love it if I would only need to create one product and have the Qty get broken up into the various size/color breakdowns.
