Recommendations for tracking prospects

Hi Folks: 

I'll admit upfront that I'm a CRM amateur, so perhaps this question has a real obvious answer. Basically, I'm wondering what's the best way to keep track of leads. Example: I have a conversation with a prospect, and I want to follow up with them two months down the road. I'd like to insert a tickler in their record so, two months later, I get some kind of reminder to contact them again. Or at least so I can find them again.

I see there's a Follow Up field, and I tried testing it but it doesn't really seem to work. Here's what I did:

1. in the Follow Up field of my lead, I typed "Call June 2, 2017"
2. I then went to the home page for my leads and checked off the Follow Up box in the Filter Leads By column
3. I then typed in "June 2, 2017" and selected "contains" in the drop down menu
4. The filter didn't seem to work ... hundreds and hundreds of entries appeared. 
5. I typed June 2, 2017 again and chose "is" from the dropdown. That produced zero results.
6. None of the other dropdown options seemed to work

So am I searching for my June 2, 2017 follow up incorrectly? Should I be using a different technique? Is there a way, ideally, to create a tickler so that I might actually receive and email on June 2, 2017 with a reminder, rather than doing a search? I don't need the email reminder so badly, as long as I can just find all my follow ups for any particular date.
