I hope Zoho answers you, Benolaa. The inability to allow ACH while also disallowing credit cards is a big weakness with ZohoBooks. Also, if you are following this topic, Zoho Books never updated us about what I alerted them to 4 months ago: Stripe payment method is NOT a solution. The Stripe settings within Zoho Books appear to allow a user to enable ACH while NOT enabling Credit Card, but it won't work. As I said before, Stripe blames Zoho and Zoho blames Stripe. If Zoho ever contacted Stripe, they didn't follow up with me or post to this topic. What our company has resorted to doing is basically just asking our customers to give us paper checks at the job site or mail them to us. If they really want to use ACH, we get them on the phone and make sure they understand that when they click the payment link, they must not pay by credit card even though it is enabled. We tell them "please understand that if you pay by credit card, we will refund the transaction and unfortunately ask you to re-do the payment using ACH or paper check." Then, we enable Stripe payment for that one invoice, as an exception, and cross our fingers that the customer understands the assignment. Not very helpful of Zoho Books not to solve this issue for us small business customers. I really hope they will understand the need for this functionality and implement it.

Seems like such a basic feature.  For now we disabled credit card on the account integration so we can only accept ACH and will manually process credit card transactions directly via stripe if we need.  As we have a low amount of transactions it will work for now but, such an unneeded pain.  What I would love to see is ACH being free and paying by credit card it automatically added the 2.9% so the customer can decide without having to reach out to us.

Wait, but how are you able to accept ACH and disable credit card? That is what I am saying is not possible. How are you doing that? Like specifically what settings allow you to accept ACH while also NOT allowing credit card? That is not possible through the payment options we have available to us in our ZohoBooks: Zoho Payments and Stripe.

If you go into settings and customer payments then edit you will see the account name and the payment methods simply click the pencil edit button and uncheck credit cards.  Then when you send an email and they click pay only ACH comes up as an option.

Are you talking about within the Stripe payment method? If you uncheck credit card, and leave ACH checked, it didn't work before (as recently as 5 months ago). It would still bring up BOTH credit card and ACH payment options if the customer clicked pay now link on the invoice. However, I just now went into settings and it seems like maybe it has been fixed. This will be great if it's true. It would have been nice if Zoho had let us know by email or by update to this topic. Thank you for sharing! I am going to test it now.

Hello @Courtney,

Thank you for staying actively involved in our forums—we truly value your contributions!

As @Shireen mentioned earlier, disabling the Credit Card option in the Stripe Settings ensures that customers won’t see the Credit Card option on the secure page, effectively preventing them from using it for invoice payments.

We’d appreciate it if you could check this on your end and share your findings with us.

Regards,
Selina Peter

Is there an option to do disable just credit cards (not ACH) on the Customer or Invoice level, or just the entire software?

Hello @Ben

Thank you for posting in our forums.

I understand that you prefer your customers to make ACH payments for invoices rather than using credit cards. To support this preference, you can disable the "Credit Card" payment option in the payment gateway. This will ensure that customers are prompted to use ACH or other supported payment methods. Here’s how to turn off the "Credit Card" payment mode:
  1. Go to Zoho Books > Settings > Customer Payments.
  2. Select the payment gateway edit the gateway settings.
  3. Uncheck the Credit Card option and click Save.

This change will apply to all your customers. If you wish to restrict only specific customers from using credit cards, please note that Zoho Books currently does not support this functionality. We’ll keep you updated on any developments regarding this feature.

Hope this helps. If you need any assistance, please write to us at support[dot]usa[at]zohobooks.com.

I came up with a suitable workaround until Zoho fixes this properly: I use Stripe for ACH and Square for credit cards. Then you can enable one or the other, or both, on a per customer/invoice level to restrict available payment methods.

@rob when I try to use Stripe for ACH it requires it to be connected via PLAID to the clients bank account or to do test transactions prior to making payment.  Where you able to find a way to make it work with just routing and account number?

Not sure if it requires plaid or not. Did you enable the "Verify instantly using Stripe Financial Connections" in the Stripe payment method settings in Zoho?

yes, when i do verify instantly it wants them to link which is crazy for someone to give a vendor access to their balances.  I just want to get paid like I am doing now with Quickbooks payment it super easy client gets a link enters routing and account number and done.  Issue with Quickbooks is that the prices keep going up.

To Selina Peter: yes, I tested the Stripe payment method setting configuration with ACH on and Credit Card off. It works now! So the bug has been fixed. Thank you!

To Ben and Rob: since the bug got fixed, we are using the Stripe payment method exclusively for ACH transactions and we are using the Zoho Payments gateway/method for credit card transactions. Since each of those methods can be turned on or off on an individual invoice basis, it allows us to take credit cards for small transactions and force ACH (or paper checks) for larger transactions. It is not as elegant as in Quickbooks, but it is a workable solution. Regarding the use of Plaid for the Stripe ACH connection verfication, yes, I believe we did it that way. It has not been a problem. I am not sure what you mean about balances. We can't see our customers' bank balances. Aren't Plaid/Stripe just ensuring that an account has enough money in it to complete a transaction?

Yes they are verifying the funds but, if you read it gives access to balances to Plaid and Stripe balances.  My clients are very wealthy and would never approve such access to their accounts.  They simply want to add their ACH and routing number and be done.  Also this requires login access to the accounts a lot of clients have their bookkeepers handling and they just have checks.

Maybe Selina Peter can let us know what is in the roadmap for Zoho Books for future feature enhancements... It would be nice to have more options for our customers to easily pay via ACH such as a way to pay without needing to have full account access/authorization. I'm at least happy to have something workable in place.
