I've been searching, but haven't been able to find a solution yet.

I'm looking for a way to enter serial numbers in a way we can easily search for the number and instantly see the associated Contact/Account. I'd think this is a basic requirement, but it seems to be harder than I expected.

If we enter the unique serial number in a note, whether associated with a Contact, Account or Sales Order, we can search it. However, the search result doesn't show the associated Contact/Account, only the note owner, modifier and content - which in my opinion is very odd.

I did find serial number tracking is available in Zoho Inventory, but as we're not tracking inventory ourselves  - we have a fulfillment partner that does. That's why I don't want to add Inventory. We're working with Shopify (where fulfillment originally enters the serial number in the Shopify Sales Order note) and use the Zoho CRM Shopify extension. Another issue is the fact that the information in the Shopify Sales Order note is ignored by the Zoho CRM extension, but I've added a separate topic for that question.
