searching multi select pick list in a custom view

I have set up a multi-select pick list field for sub-industries. When I enter the data in the pick list, it allows me to select multiple items. BUT, when I want to use the field in a custom view, the pick list is not available. My users would incorrectly type in the search requirements, hence the need for a pick list.
