Slow and difficult collaboration

I've been collaborating with 6 people over a 450,000 character document. So far it's been slow to load, and balky to use. Approving edits is tedious with both the UI design and the lag time.

Does anyone know any tricks or pitfalls for collaborating? We are going to give it a total of two weeks, then abandon Zoho completely if we can't get it to work smoothly.
