What happened?  I used to be able to sort by these two fields and now I cannot.  This is a very important feature to me as I have a ton of e-mail to sort through on a daily basis.  How can you have taken this important feature out?  Am I missing something, is there a different way to do this now and I am just unaware?  It was great to be able to click on the word "From" or "Subject" and get my results quickly.  This was one of the features that sold me on this mail product.  With Google Mail I had to used "tags" in order to do sorts, which I cannot stand and it led me away from their product and I hope I don't have to do the same with yours.  Removing time-saving procedures like these will regress your product significantly.
