Step by step registration process for new users?

Application of new users is a very complex process. The difference betweeen Email ID, user ID is not clear. And adding to this complexity is the difference between Business user and Wiki user. Please can you provide a step by step application process for new users? Is it better to start with a Business ID and than proceed to Wiki?
