Stop parent accont from overwriting child account address

Hi
Many of my users have found an issue with assigning parent accounts. When a perent account is to an existing (or newly created Account) both the billing and shipping adresses are over written. Personally I can't think any reason that would be useful and it is wasting hours of our users time having to correct the adresses. Can this be fixed.
