Table insert

Recently there have been some problems inserting tables for me. Two things are happening.

1. After making the table, I insert some text and blank lines are added, increasing the size of the cell. I don't want that, and have explored various ways to bypass it but as of yet have not found a way. This behavior did not happen before. I am using Firefox browser, 3.6.3.

2. After making a table, I would like sometimes to add a column. When I go to add the column, the screen darkens. This is not unusual, because it happened in the past, and a pop up box came up asking if I want to be able to change the sizes. However, now no pop up comes up, which means I have to exit out of zoho writer, and of course not be able to add the desired column.

I do use tables frequently for word list design, so this is somewhat frustrating.
