Tip of the week 46- How to craft effective subject line? (Part-One)

Let us travel back to the time when the door-to-door sales were most prevalent, where the sales began with a knock on the door. Every sales guy on our door was unique in their own way. If salesperson A made us to slam our door then salesperson B pinched us with curiosity. Now, with whom did you end up buying their offer and what made you do that?

Yes! It was the salesperson B who created a great first impression with the way they introduced themselves and the product, that either made our doors open for a little longer or made us to shut it down within a second.

Even in the world of email marketing, the first impression stands as our key to open doors of success, by using a well crafted subject line.

Now let us dig in to know how to create an Inbox ready subject line that can push up your success meter!

1) Stay short but impactful

Most of the email readers never read, but scan up the words. So, to catch up with the scanning mind of such readers, you should write a subject line which is both short and impactful.

Apart from this, most of the emails are viewed through smartphones, that means your subject line should play its game within that small space. So, it is always recommended to write a subject line within 25-30 characters and to maintain a word limit between 6 to 8 words.

 2) Brew-up curiosity

Curiosity never killed a cat nor did it kill any human. So, you can safely add a pinch of curiosity while creating the subject line.

The best way to build a curious subject line is to use questionnaire format, that will make the email recipients become curious about the content of your email campaign or give a sneak peek about the introductory part of the campaign to convey about the content of the email through an incomplete story.

3) Personalization has always been the key

Who does not love attention? Every human at one or the other point would have craved for attention and when you shower some personal attention to your email readers, then there are plenty of chances that it will be read by them.

The subject line can be personalised by adding the readers' name and emojis. You can even go one step further and use the available data about the readers and research about their area of interest to draft subject line accordingly. On the whole, it all goes down to understanding your users and giving them the best.

4) Write like Romans, when in Rome

Spin-up a flexible subject line according to the likes and dislikes of your audience, by knowing your audience by their bones.

Some like a funny subject line, some love a pinch of movie references and some expect it all to be formal, so it is always safe and best to bend and write according to the likes of your readers. It is not easy to know the likes of your audience easily, so to begin with you can make use of A/B testing feature of Zoho Campaigns, to test and select the most loved subject line.

 5) Do play the game of how-to and numbers

The 'how-to' and 'listicle' content is very popular in digital space, as they are solution-driven and very easy to consume. These two big hits can become the star of your email campaign with a suitable subject line.

So, while phrasing the subject line for content that gives out
business solutions, use 'how-to'.

For content that is set up in the listicles format, use numbers so that readers get an idea about the length of your content.

Fingers are ten, so for now, just store the above email marketing tricks in the tip of your five fingers and use the same for your next campaign until we come back with another five tips for you!

Cheers,

In today's market, the importance of customer behavior is astounding, with a vast amount of research and resources going into finding how customers make decisions. If crafting content for emails, getting creatives done, and running email campaigns is your love, then unsubscribes are the heartbreakers.  You can save your emails from being unsubscribed/trashed by adding a proper subscription-preferences option in your emails (works best at the time of signup). Giving subscribers the option to choose what they want to receive from you and decide how often (frequency of the emails) your emails should hit their inboxes will increase the reach of your campaigns manifolds.
