Unused Fields in a Layout - Are the still in the database tables?

I recently created a new "Standard" layout for my sales team, moving many fields they don't need to the "unused fields" section of the layout. I have a separate layout for "Marketing", which shows the fields.

As a result of the change, I'm now getting an error when importing records into the Leads module in Zoho CRM.

My workflow is:  Unbounce > Zapier > Zoho CRM Leads

The field causing the error is Boolean, true/false.  This fields is "unused" in my Standard layout.

I would assume that even though a field is "unused" it is still in the database tables and should import properly. It is "used" in my Marketing layout. 

It's my understanding that if a field exists, then it exists. The Layout is simply a way to decide what fields each user should see.  Is this wrong?  Can you help me understand "unused" fields in one layout?
