Updating custom fields with Zoho CRM API?

In ZOHO, we have created several custom fields that we would like to be updated from our custom customer database.  As an example, in ZOHO, we have added custom fields such as “LicenseType”.  We would like to update the Zoho database with the data from our customer database.    So, if we update info in our customer database, the Zoho API would update the Zoho CRM database so that the two systems remain “in-sync” on the custom fields.  Is this possible?  If so, what would be the best method to use to update the zoho custom fields with new data?
