Use of the amount field

Hi,

I'm new to Zoho and currently setting up our system and getting my head around the processes. Can someone tell me if the intended use of the 'amount' field at lead conversion is for an annual figure or a monthly figure (or something else)? Your help would be greatly appreciated as I can't seem to find an obvious answer anywhere :/
