Using the Lead Module for different purpose

Using the Lead Module for different purpose

In our CRM, we do not have use for the Lead Module. I am wondering what would happen if I modify the layout in the Lead Module to serve a different purpose? For example, I need to manage information about the media that we work with in public relations. I know I can add custom fields to the Lead Module, But is there an underlying structure to the module that makes it inflexible to use it for a different purpose? We have the Professional Plan. I know the Enterprise plan allows you create custom modules, but the overall plan is an overkill for our needs.
