Web To Form update

I have designed a Web Form and I want to update existing Contacts or Leads database and I seem to have 2 options:

1. Update to Lead Approval, then add to Databse, then search for Duplicates, Set the parameters and Update - this option is labour intensive and slow.

2. Update the Database without the Lead Approvel option but this will create a record for EACH returned Form. This option is not attractive either because it will create a mess in the database with many Duplicates with differents bits of information that come from different Forms that we designed. To consolidate this information into one record will also be a slow manual operation.

So I wonder there is a solution can I can consider - if there is some existing functionality that I should be looking at, I would appreciate such information, or perhaps using the API may be the only option.

I would appreciate any guidance on this topic.
