What is a Standard Filter vs Advanced Filter?

What is a Standard Filter vs Advanced Filter?

On my Reports, there is a section above that allows for a filter called a "Standard Filter" - can I control which fields are shown in this filter? I can't tell why the fields that are shown are there, and I would like to adjust them so that I can filter a report on the fly without having to change the filter within the report settings itself.
