What is Contact ID and Company ID fields?

What is Contact ID and Company ID fields?

Hi I am trying to do an import of contacts but it won't let me do this unless i have chosen which columen is the contact ID. What data should be in the contact ID field. Same goes for when importing companies it asks for company ID.
