What is the definition of "recently modified" or "recently created" in list views?

What is the definition of "recently modified" or "recently created" in list views?

Hello, please advise what defines something as "recent" as used in Recently Created Leads or Recently Modified Account.  
I would like to create custom views based on the same parameters, but can only see the ability to select Today, Tomorrow or before a specific date.
