When choosing between follow up and workflow?

I wonder about the best way to create a tunnel bringing an unknown prospect up to integrate it into the CRM
In which cases to use
1 / the sequence of campaign or follow up
2 / setting up a Workflow
and in this second case I did not find a description to understand which wflo to use in which situations

2 exemples :

1st :
I address a sequence of different mails
The first mail can be read but for example not the second
In this case it is necessary to be able to stop the sequence
Which workflow function to choose according to what we want:
- If one of the successive emails is not open, we do not send the following email, and we send a reminder message at regular intervals. (Loop reminder?)
Is it possible to choose whether the reminder message is identi- cal or different. Example: I have 4 reminders; with 3 identical first reminders and a last different.
As soon as the reminder message is opened, or then sends again and immediately the mail waiting for reading.

Second case 
It does not take into account the reading of one of the mails, and have sent the mails one after another

IN addition question ; Is it possible to trigger a new workflow following the result of a previous workflow or answer from recipients ?
