Why do brackets '[' and quotes " appear outside of Multi-select field values

Why do brackets '[' and quotes " appear outside of Multi-select field values

I am using multi-select custom fields.  The values that appear on the website appear inside of [""']. Why is that? How do I remove those brackets & quotes?
