Unsubscribes

In short: an easy unsubscribe protects you. A visible unsubscribe link plus a one-click option (now required for bulk senders) keeps unhappy recipients from hitting "report spam" instead. Zoho Campaigns adds the link automatically and moves anyone who opts out to your Do-Not-Mail list. A rising unsubscribe rate is a signal to rethink your content, targeting, or frequency.

Unsubscribes are disappointing, but they’re a valuable learning signal. A wave of them tells you something about your marketing approach needs to change. This guide helps you make the most of that feedback.

What is an unsubscribe?

  • When someone unsubscribes, they’ve cancelled their subscription to your mailing list. Reasons range from spammy or too-frequent sending to simple disinterest — or even an accidental click.
  • Anti-spam laws require a clear way to opt out of promotional email. In the US the CAN-SPAM Act mandates a conspicuous unsubscribe mechanism; the EU’s GDPR and Canada’s CASL go further and require consent up front. On top of the law, since February 2024 Google and Yahoo require bulk senders (5,000+ messages a day) to support a one-click unsubscribe.
  • Zoho Campaigns adds an unsubscribe link to your email footer automatically. Contacts who aren’t interested can opt out with a single click, and we make sure you don’t email them again.
  • If you use a custom template, include the unsubscribe merge tag $[LI:UNSUBSCRIBE]$. If you skip it, you’ll be prompted to add it before you can continue with your campaign.

One-click unsubscribe (now required)

A visible footer link is no longer enough on its own. For bulk senders, Google and Yahoo require a true one-click unsubscribe implemented through the List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers defined in RFC 8058 — this is what puts a native "Unsubscribe" button next to your sender name in Gmail. The request must be honored within two days. You need both: the header for inbox-level opt-out and the in-body link for everyone else. Making people log in, confirm several times, or wade through a preference center just to leave drives spam complaints instead.

What happens when someone unsubscribes?

When a contact clicks unsubscribe, their address is immediately added to your Do-Not-Mail list, and no further emails from your account can reach them. If they want your emails again, they have to resubscribe. To do so, a contact can:
  1. Open the unsubscribe confirmation email, which contains a resubscribe option, or
  2. Open any previous email from your organization and use the footer links to sign up again.
When you select an email template while creating your message, Zoho Campaigns adds an unsubscribe button to the footer by default. If you remove the header/footer theme, you must include the $[LI:UNSUBSCRIBE]$ or $[LI:ORG_OPTOUT]$ merge tag in the template (preferably near the bottom). If you don’t, your email’s header and footer are automatically replaced with the default ones.

Why include an unsubscribe option?

  • It’s legally required (CAN-SPAM, GDPR, CASL) and now a mailbox-provider requirement for bulk senders.
  • Without an easy exit, "report as spam" becomes the only option left — and complaints are capped: Google and Yahoo want your rate below 0.1% and enforce a 0.3% ceiling. A clunky unsubscribe is one of the biggest drivers of complaints.
  • Some contacts simply aren’t interested anymore; respecting their choice protects your brand and your sender reputation.
  • Unsubscribe trends are useful data — a spike often points to a content, targeting, or frequency problem you can fix.

Account suspension

Certain conditions can get your account suspended, and your unsubscribe rate is one of them. An excessive unsubscribe rate can lead to temporary or permanent suspension, so treat a rising rate as an early warning to adjust your approach.

CAN-SPAM and other laws

CAN-SPAM (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing) is a US law passed in 2003. It applies to US commercial email; non-compliance can bring steep civil penalties (into the tens of thousands of dollars per email) and, for some conduct, criminal liability. Its core requirement is to keep opting out simple and to honor opt-out requests promptly. Other key CAN-SPAM points:
  • Header information ("from," "to," and routing details) must be accurate so recipients can identify you and your domain.
  • The subject line must reflect the message content and the sender’s intent — no deceptive subjects.
  • The message must include your valid physical postal address.
  • Opt-out requests must be honored within 10 business days, and the mechanism must stay working for at least 30 days after sending. (Google and Yahoo’s two-day standard for bulk senders is stricter — build to the tightest rule you’re subject to.)
If any of your recipients are in the EU/UK or Canada, GDPR and CASL generally require opt-in consent and an equally easy way to withdraw it, so the safest approach is to apply the strictest standard across your whole list. For the US baseline, see the FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide.

Zoho Campaigns does not allow sending campaigns without an unsubscribe option. While you can move the Unsubscribe link out of the default footer, we strongly recommend keeping it clearly visible in another section of the email. Learn more about placing the Unsubscribe link in a different section.
