Double opt-in adds an extra confirmation step to verify each email address added to your contact database. When this setting is enabled, contacts who have subscribed to your business through sign-up forms, any other form (newsletters, pop-ups etc) on your website, or via the Forms API will automatically receive a follow-up email with a link to confirm their subscription.
Typically, contacts sign up through forms on your website or brand to subscribe to email campaigns. However, not all sign-ups reflect genuine intent. Some users may unknowingly subscribe while filling out a form, while others may be interested in your product or service but not necessarily in receiving emails. Continuing to send emails to such contacts not only wastes time and effort but also increases the chances of them getting annoyed or disengaged.
This is where double opt-in becomes useful. It works by sending a confirmation email immediately after a user signs up, asking them to verify their subscription by clicking a link. This additional step helps ensure that the contact truly wants to receive emails from your organization. In turn, it strengthens consent, improves the quality of your contact list, and helps you engage only with users who are genuinely interested.
