Understanding Accessibility Personas

Accessibility ensures that all people, regardless of their abilities, can participate independently in society. This encompasses everything from navigating and orienting oneself in physical spaces to absorbing information and accessing services.

Accessibility includes various disabilities, such as:

  • Visual: Blindness, low vision, color blindness.
  • Auditory: Deafness, hard of hearing.
  • Physical: Mobility impairments, dexterity issues.
  • Speech: Difficulties in speech.
  • Cognitive: Intellectual disabilities, memory issues, learning disabilities.
  • Learning: Dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning difficulties.

What is Digital Accessibility?

Digital Accessibility focuses on designing technology products and environments to ensure people with diverse disabilities can use the services, products, or functions without barriers. This involves:

  1. Web and App Design: Ensuring websites and applications are usable with screen readers, have keyboard navigability, and include features like alternative text for images and captions for videos.
  2. User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX): Designing interfaces that are simple, intuitive, and customizable to meet individual needs. This includes considering color contrasts, text size options, and layouts that are easy to navigate.
  3. Assistive Technologies: Supporting tools like screen readers, voice recognition software, and other assistive technologies that help people with disabilities interact with digital content.
  4. Compliance with Standards: Adhering to established guidelines like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) ensures that digital platforms meet the necessary accessibility standards. WCAG provides a wide range of recommendations for making web content more accessible to people with various disabilities.

Zoho Desk is committed to adhering to the WCAG guidelines, ensuring that the Desk account is accessible to all users. To support this commitment, Zoho Desk has implemented Accessibility Personas.

What are Accessibility Personas?

Accessibility Personas are designed to cater to the diverse needs of users by offering a range of customizable features. Each persona addresses specific user preferences, promoting a more inclusive and personalized experience.

For example, for users with color blindness, Zoho Desk's Color Blindness Persona can be used to enable several features to enhance usability. One key feature is Increased Contrast, which enhances the contrast between text and background to ensure all content is distinguishable. Additionally, the Appearance setting switches to night mode, reducing eye strain by providing a dark background with lighter text. The Themes option is set to red, selecting color schemes that are more easily distinguishable for those with color vision deficiencies. While these features are enabled while choosing the color blindness persona, users can still personalize their settings to match their specific preferences, ensuring a highly accessible and comfortable user experience.

The Desk account automatically enables the recommended features for each persona, allowing users the flexibility to further personalize their experience.
